Understanding Type Approval

What Is Homologation?

Homologation, also called type approval, is the process of obtaining approval from the relevant authority that a vehicle type, system or component meets the legal requirements of its target market.

The manufacturer demonstrates compliance through technical documentation and the testing required by the applicable approval route.

Why Does It Matter?

Approval requirements influence vehicle design, testing and market entry. Identifying them early helps a manufacturer plan the evidence needed before submitting an approval application.

Automotive Homologation

Three Levels of Vehicle Approval

Homologation demonstrates that a vehicle, system or component meets the legal requirements of its target market. The manufacturer provides compliance evidence, including testing where required.

Commercial vehicle components, chassis and cab shown in the supplied presentation
  1. 01

    Component Type Approval

Approval of individual components that may be fitted to a vehicle, such as seat belts, tyres and lamps.

  2. 02

    System Type Approval

Assessment of systems in their installed condition, such as braking, restraints and lighting.

  3. 03

    Whole Vehicle Type Approval

Approval of the vehicle in its entirety, bringing the relevant component and system evidence together.

Approval Routes

Different Routes for Different Production Needs

Series production, small batches and individual vehicles need an approval route matched to the product and its destination.

01

EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval

An EU-wide approval route for series production of an approved vehicle type.

02

National Small-Series Type Approval

A route for limited production volumes in the issuing Member State. Recognition elsewhere follows the applicable procedures.

03

Individual Vehicle Approval

Assessment of an individual vehicle against the requirements of the selected national or EU approval route.
