What Are Vehicle Type Approval and Homologation?

Type approval is the official confirmation that a vehicle, system, or component meets the minimum legal, technical, and safety standards of a given market. Homologation is the wider journey that leads to it: the full process of getting a product assessed, tested, documented, and formally approved by the relevant authority.

An approval is a government-recognised certificate that gives a product permission to be sold or registered in a particular country or region. The path usually begins with an initial evaluation, continues with Conformity of Production (CoP) checks against the applicable standards and directives, and ends with a set of well-documented technical reports submitted to the authorities for the final decision.

ATS Poland guides manufacturers through each of these stages, helping them meet every legal requirement and enter their target markets with confidence.

Why Does Homologation Matter?

Every country has its own regulations and certification procedures, and the documents are often published only in the local language. Brazil’s INMETRO requirements, for example, are available in Portuguese only. Misreading them can cause misunderstandings, rejected applications, and costly delays.

  1. Avoid Late-Stage Redesigns

Knowing the target market’s requirements early lets you build compliance into the product, so you don’t have to rework it just before launch.

  2. Save Time and Money

Planning homologation for several markets together, rather than one at a time, cuts duplicated effort, lowers development costs, and gets the product to customers faster.

  3. Build Trust

Certified compliance is proof of safety. It strengthens your reputation with regulators, partners, and end customers alike.
